£24k for the taking after sabbatical position left vacant

by Odhran Gallagher

News

This is the first time in a number of years that a paid student position at the SRC has been left vacant.

A paid sabbatical position at the Student Representative Council (SRC) has been left vacant for this year’s Spring elections. The position of Vice President Student Activities, which is paid an annual salary of £24,600, currently has no nominees for this week’s election.

The provisional candidates list, released on Friday 21 February showed one nominee for the position. However, Hillhead Review understands that the candidate has made the decision to drop out, leaving the position vacant.

The SRC council includes four paid sabbatical positions. This year, the position of President is contested by three candidates, with the positions of Vice President Education and Vice President Student Support contested by three and four candidates respectively.

As per the SRC’s constitution: “Where insufficient candidates are nominated in any constituency or where a vacancy occurs, such vacancies may be filled by a by-election as the Executive Committee may decide”.

However, the SRC is yet to announce when they intend to hold a by-election for the position.

Voting for the contested positions in the Spring elections will open for students at 9am Wednesday 5 March via the UofG Life app and close at 5pm the following day.
