Student encampment ends
The encampment branded the ‘Dima Alhaj Liberated Zone’ by Palestine activists has ended after six days.
Glasgow University Justice for Palestine Society (GUJPS) took to Instagram to announce the end of their six day encampment on Library Hill, in protest of University investment in arms companies.
The statement read; “Throughout the week, we utilised our presence on campus to engage with the wider student body and grow our movement. Through political education and community events, we are walking out stronger, ready to continue escalation until victory is written.
“The encampment received overwhelming support from students, staff and community members who showed up to honour our over 300,000 Palestinian martyrs since October 7th 2023, and to protest the University’s complicity in their murder.”
This follows yesterday’s news of the end of the ten day hunger strike. A GUJPS activist said; “The brazen and wilful ignorance of the University Management over this past week and a half has demonstrated to us that you cannot appeal to the heart’s of the heartless administration. They have shown that there is nothing that they will not risk to maintain it, including the health of their own students.”
GUJPS also promised that “divestment is inevitable” and urged supporters “not to view [the end of the hunger strike] as deescalation.”
The encampment was branded the “Dima Alhaj Zone” after the University of Glasgow alumni Dima Abdullatif Mohammed Alhaj who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza in 2023.
This comes after the student body voted overwhelmingly in favour for the University to divest from arms companies. Of those polled, 89.3% voted ‘yes’ to the question; “Should the University of Glasgow stop investing in companies that earn more than 10% of their revenue from the arms and defence industry?” This represents 17.2% of the student population.
The University has been contacted for comment.
