University urges students to get vaccinated
The University has shared information via social media on free vaccinations for students.
A post on social media by the University of Glasgow has urged students to get vaccinated against infectious diseases such as measles.
The post, shared on Tuesday 10 December, contained a link to a webpage on the NHS Inform website offering vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella, and meningitis.
In January of this year, an outbreak of measles in England resulted in more than 200 confirmed cases and affected the Universities of Birmingham, Ashton, and Coventry.
The virus is highly contagious and can cause complications in younger patients, or those with compromised immune systems.
Students can also be particularly vulnerable because of a low uptake of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccinations.
The webpage reads: “It’s really important for all students to ensure they’re up to day with their vaccines before starting college or University.
“You should have had: measles, mumps, and rubella [as well as] meningitis.
“If you’ve missed any of your vaccines, make sure you try and get it as soon as possible. To arrange a vaccine appointment, contact your local NHS immunisation team.”
